Color Red

Let me ask you a question. When was the last time you really truly listened to what your customers were saying...or were not saying to you? Have you as a web user ever been prompted to ask your visiting public why or why they are not purchasing from you? I do from time to time, but one day I got a call from someone who I have known for a while, who is on my mailings, but never purchased anything. The call started off nicely, but gradually I found out this would be a business changing call.
My wife and I were prepping for a trip East to see her relatives for the Christmas holiday (yes, this 2007 Christmas). I had sent out a mailing to a list of clients letting them know about some specials that were going to finish on the 31st of December. If they did not get in now, they'd have to pay double the price. See I only work with a select number of clients each year and want to make sure they are treated special, so I allocate a certain number of hours for each of them during the year and charge a fixed price for services.
This particular package is my SEO package. Normally I charge $2000 for it, it was discounted to $999, but now it's $1500. On the 1st of January it jumps back to $2,000 for the year.
I like many other Internet Marketers use that RED HURRY UP COLOR along with a point size of around 31pts and generally a TAHOMA or IMPACT font to allow for clarity of the message. They also use that "GET YOUR USED CAR TODAY SALES PITCH!" I'll bet that if they knew now what I found out on this particular day they'd change their colors quickly to something more appealing.
The phone rang and there was this pleasant voice on the other end of the line wanting to speak with me about this special offering and to discuss some details. I thought "Okay, this is nice, I'll sign a new client and when we return from vacation I can work with her to reposition her website." Boy was I in for a surprise.
She started out telling me she was on my list and liked my website and mailings but something was bugging her and she could not put her finger on it till that morning. She then went on to describe to me that the color RED gave her some bad feelings. Being the conscious person that I am and open to receiving input, I asked her simply to "tell me about it", well...she did. Are you aware she said that the color red brings up some bad thoughts for women? I did not know that I said. "For me it reminds of my monthly woman happening that you men cannot appreciate, and it also reminds me of great pains that I suffered as a child, so I would not sign up for your services if you were giving them away and I will tell every woman I know not to!"
I was in shock. I had never heard such a thing and my first instinct as a man was to defend myself, but as a conscious man it was to ask more questions and to listen very carefully to the answers. In doing so I learned of what this color meant and how the point sizes affected the message in the eyes of women as well. I quickly opened a page editor while we were talking and made some modifications. I asked her to refresh her browser and she calmed down instantly.
By decreasing from a 31pt to a 24pt font, she felt safer reading the page, and by changing that "IN YOUR FACE RED" to a softer "Teal Blue" she felt safer and more secure reading the rest of the content and changed from I'd never buy that to "Where do I sign up?" and can I do it now client.
Do yourself a favor. If your website is NOT selling products, or they're selling slowly, ask your visitors what they think of the site, give them some kind of award for telling you what they think. Engage them in a phone call of some kind or an email discussion and listen very carefully to what they say. They are your market. They have access to others, hundreds, thousands or due to the net millions of people who will buy or not buy your products. So simply listen and learn. It's not rocket science, but it does in this case approach it just a bit.
She signed up, someone else signed up and I am about close my offerings for the year with another 2 clients before December 31 (yes there are 2 openings, so hurry and sign up for the SEO or WEBSITE package so you can be treated with respect, attention and delivery unmatched on the net).
Look things over at http://www.docmurdock.com and see the large text on that page at the top guiding you to the two great offerings. Get them now while they're hot!
To your success,
Michael
